Calypso, MYSO’s first steel pan experience, was created in 2007.
When Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra launched its steel pan program, the goal was to create a vibrant, culturally rich musical experience for middle and high school students who live or attend school in the City of Milwaukee.
Calypso was the first ensemble established, offering students the opportunity to develop new and exciting musical and rhythmic skills in a highly collaborative setting. The program was designed for students who demonstrated a positive attitude, a natural sense of rhythm, and a genuine desire to learn, qualities that helped shape the joyful and energetic spirit that defined the group.
As interest and participation grew, the program expanded. Due to its popularity, the Soca steel pan band was formed in 2013, creating even more opportunities for students to engage with this dynamic art form.
Calypso quickly became a visible and celebrated presence in the community, performing throughout Milwaukee at high-profile events such as Summerfest, the Lakefront Festival of the Arts, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebrations, among many others, bringing the vibrant sound of steel pan music to audiences across the city.
