When Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra first launched the Prelude Wind Ensemble as part of its innovative Community Partnership Programs, the vision was clear: to expand access to high-quality music education for young musicians who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
Created as an immersive two-year training program for fifth and sixth-grade students living or attending school in the City of Milwaukee and underserved by music education, Prelude Wind Ensemble focused on building strong foundations in woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Students who were nominated and accepted received weekly small group lessons, sectional rehearsals, and full band rehearsals—establishing a comprehensive support system designed to nurture both musical growth and confidence.
As the concert band counterpart to MYSO’s Progressions strings program, Prelude Wind Ensemble was designed to create a clear and equitable pathway into MYSO’s larger ensemble programs.
From the beginning, the program was primarily donor-funded, ensuring that financial barriers would not stand in the way of participation. Students received virtually full scholarships covering instruments, private lessons, membership, and transportation as needed.
Admission was and still is intentionally community-centered, with students accepted through nomination by school principals, teachers, and music directors, strengthening partnerships with local schools while identifying young musicians with potential and passion
