In our latest podcast episode, we spotlight a remarkable story of passion and perseverance from one of MYSO’s talented percussionists. Unlike many of his peers who began their musical journey in early childhood, Nico only started playing music less than four years ago as a freshman in high school. Now, he drives 45 minutes from Kenosha to Milwaukee up to five times a week to rehearse with multiple MYSO ensembles, including the Senior Symphony.

“Being on stage, being with people who came to see you…they’re not just here because it’s a school assembly. Sometimes, they even pay to be there,” Nico reflects on what drives his dedication. His commitment goes beyond the musicโ€“he’s found a community where conversations about new musical pieces flow naturally and where artistic excellence inspires daily growth.

What makes Nico’s story particularly compelling is how MYSO has shaped his character beyond the rehearsal hall. He credits his musical training for developing crucial life skills, especially self-discipline. Despite maintaining his busiest schedule yet, Nico’s academic performance improved significantly after joining MYSO, thanks to the focus and dedication he learned through practicing.

The episode features two stunning percussion performances that showcase Nico’s talent, including his rendition of “Ghost Garden” by Adam Hopper. These musical interludes demonstrate the remarkable progress possible when passion meets opportunityโ€“even when starting later than most.

For aspiring musicians wondering if it’s “too late” to pursue their musical dreams, Nico’s journey offers an inspiring counter-narrative. His story embodies MYSO’s mission of nurturing young talent and creating pathways to musical excellence, regardless of when that journey begins.
