The Transformative Power of MYSO: A Journey Across Generations

In a recent MYSO podcast episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Beth (Conradson) Cleary, a MYSO alumna who is now a MYSO parent. Beth’s unique perspective, spanning her own experiences and those of her son Anderson, offers valuable insights into the lasting impact of MYSO on young musicians and their families.

A Musical Journey Begins

Beth’s MYSO journey began in sixth grade when her band director and private flute teacher encouraged her to audition. Starting with the flute choir, she quickly found herself immersed in a world of musical exploration. From discovering new instruments like the bass flute to learning innovative techniques such as flutter tonguing, MYSO opened Beth’s eyes to the vast possibilities within music.

More Than Just Music

While the musical education was invaluable, Beth emphasized that MYSO offered much more. The program provided a unique opportunity to connect with peers from diverse backgrounds across southeastern Wisconsin, fostering a sense of community that extended beyond the rehearsal room.

Carrying the Torch: The Next Generation

Now, years later, Beth’s son Anderson is following in her footsteps as a MYSO member. His experience, while different due to his heavy involvement in athletics, is equally enriching. Beth notes how MYSO has boosted Anderson’s confidence, improved his playing abilities, and provided him with unique opportunities like being a musical ambassador during field trips.

Life Skills Beyond the Stage

Some of the most significant takeaways from Beth’s MYSO experience are the transferable skills she gained. These skills, which she still uses in her professional life today, include:

  1. effective listening and communication
  2. understanding how different parts work together in an ecosystem
  3. the ability to read ahead and anticipate what’s coming next
  4. adapting to work with talented peers and instructors

Beth sees these same skills developing in Anderson, believing they will serve him well in all aspects of life.

The MYSO Community: More Than Music

An unexpected highlight of the MYSO experience for both generations has been the sense of community fostered through shared experiences

like carpooling. Beth fondly remembers forming lasting friendships during her MYSO days and now cherishes the opportunity to facilitate similar connections for Anderson and his peers.

A Call to Join the MYSO Family

For parents considering MYSO for their children, Beth offers enthusiastic encouragement. She praises the organization’s commitment to accessibility, willingness to work with families on scheduling and financial concerns, and the genuine care shown by every staff member for the students’ overall well-being.

In Beth’s words, “I can’t think of any reason why you wouldn’t want to be part of it, honestly.”

As one of the largest youth music programs in the country, MYSO continues to grow and impact young lives positively. It’s not just about creating great musicians; it’s about fostering well-rounded individuals who will contribute positively to their communities.
