Dear MYSO Family,
As we move further into fall and the days grow shorter, it’s a good time to review safety, and common-sense courtesy and security at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center (MYAC). In addition, there is a NEW parking option available for users of MYAC.
Parking Options at MYAC
- NEW: MYSO families can now use the United Way Parking Lot at the northeast corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Walnut/Pleasant St. on weekday afternoons/evenings and weekends.
- MPS parking lot at the southwest corner of Vel R. Phillips Ave. and Galena St. (available after 3:00 pm)
- street parking throughout the neighborhood, including on Vel R. Phillips Ave., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., and on Cherry, Galena, 2nd, and Walnut Streets. (See map below.)
Safety
Considerable effort has been undertaken by MYAC to ensure a safe environment, including adequate lighting, security cameras, and public safety personnel for our facility. Please remember we are in an urban area. We ask that members and families do their part by using good
judgment and practicing safe behaviors. Please be careful when crossing streets, keep valuables out of sight in your car, and only walk in designated crosswalks. See pages 17-20 of our 2025-26 member handbook (click here for English version; haga clic aquí para español).
Uniformed public safety officers are onsite during weekday and weeknight programming, and occasionally on the weekends. Their primary purpose is the safety of all who enter and leave our facility.
Please kindly respect their direction when they address traffic log jams on Walnut Street and in our parking lot. They are doing this to create a safer environment for everyone.
Drop-off / Pick-up
We rely on the courtesy, respect, and patience of our families toward one another to ensure safety when dropping off and picking up musicians. Please appreciate that many families are all trying to do this at the same time. Your thoughtfulness and kindness are greatly appreciated.
Please note that you may not park and/or stand in your vehicle with your hazard lights flashing for extended periods of time in the loading zone or in the MYAC parking lot while waiting for your child to exit MYAC. We are concerned about the safety of our younger musicians, especially as they sometimes dart around the parking lot in these congested conditions.
We can all help by being respectful of one another and:
- obeying posted No Parking/Standing signs,
- dropping off in the loading zone, exiting on the curb side,
- not parking, standing, or blocking traffic in the loading zone,
- turning RIGHT when entering the MYAC parking lot and moving counterclockwise through the lot,
- not blocking traffic in the MYAC parking lot.
Cell Phone
If your child has a cell phone, please consider having them call you when they’re ready to be picked up on Walnut Street. You can wait on a nearby side street or in one of the lots mentioned above.
Thank you for your attention to safety which benefits all who use our facility.
The MYSO Team
