looking for new participants for 2023-24
We have a fun, unique opportunity to offer young Milwaukee students: two Caribbean-style steel pan bands for City of Milwaukee students in grades 6-12.Â
The program is a part of the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO), one of the largest and most respected youth orchestra programs in the country. MYSO offers musical training and performance opportunities to young musicians of diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
MYSO’s Steel Bands play traditional and contemporary music–from Caribbean and Latin American styles, and American popular culture. The steel drums, also known as pans, are tuned metal instruments that produce a bright and cheerful sound. Playing in a steel band is a great way to develop musical skills, teamwork, and cultural awareness. And it’s just plain fun!
Requirements for MYSO Steel Bands:Â
- students must be in grades 6-12, and reside in or attend school in the City of Milwaukee
- some musical experience is preferred
- $75 registration fee, financial aid available
The bands perform throughout the year at various venues and events. Work in a fun and friendly environment with supportive instructors and peers!
2023-2024 Steel Bands Schedule:
- Season begins Thursday, September 7, 2023
- Rehearsals are every Thursday, 4:30 – 6:30 pm (Soca) OR 7:00 – 9:00 pm (Calypso) at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center
