12/1 Note

Dear Metropolitan Symphony Musicians,

We were very pleased with sectional attendance and engagement Monday night! The clinicians were positive in their descriptions about their work with you, and we will reinforce their work in our upcoming rehearsals.

As we circulated through the sectionals, it appeared that you worked on two levels:

  • support on specific challenging passages in our repertoire
  • general instrument and rehearsal techniques to develop your musicianship

This is exactly what we hoped was going to happen. Now, it is up to you to continue your focus in BOTH areas. Apply the general musicianship suggestions to your playing every time you pick up your instrument–at home, in school band or orchestra, with your private teacher, and in our future rehearsals. The sound you create is what makes Met special!

And, obviously, please continue to work out the difficult passages. In many cases, the clinician suggested practice strategies or fingerings to help you be more successful. But your individual work is the next step. The clinicians only showed you the path, but you need to put in the time. It will be worth it, though!

We are excited to hear the orchestra next week. Until then, please use what you learned to move forward on our work together.
