9.26.23 Note

Dear Metropolitan Musician,

We hope you felt positive about our progress together on Monday! We are now well on the other side of the sight-reading process! We are pleased that so many of you have obviously spent that critical time individually to become more familiar with our challenging repertoire, both physically on your instrument, and also by listening and following along with your part. Knowing ‘how it goes’ is so helpful as we put the pieces together each Monday.

Remember to practice those passages you know are challenging with a tuner, metronome, and recording app. Sometimes one needs to go over intervals very slowly with a tuner to check for intonation tendencies, sometimes with a metronome to strengthen the sense of time. Then, record yourself to listen for improvement and to identify passages needing more work.

Next week is our sectional session: MYSO has hired a special team of experts to work with you in these smaller groups. Please bring your questions and ‘problem passages’ to the table. Our clinicians want to help you! They will be able to meet your needs more effectively if you ask for help. No matter where you sit in the section, you can drive improvement and help your section!

Thank you for your ongoing work. Have a great week!
