The Heart of MYSO: Ms. Roz’s Story of Music, Mentorship, and Memories

In our latest podcast episode, we’ll tell you the story of a young violist who dreamed of conducting one of MYSO’s orchestras when she was a MYSO member herself, and achieved that dream decades later.

When sixth-grader Lauren Roznowski received her MYSO nomination letter, she had no idea she was beginning a lifelong journey that would shape her career, friendships, and ultimately bring her back to lead the next generation of young musicians.ย

Now known affectionately as “Ms. Roz” to her students, Lauren Roznowski Hayden serves as music director of MYSO’s Sinfonia orchestra, bringing a unique perspective shaped by her experiences as a former student, current music educator, and MYSO parent. “The things I remember most about middle and high school all center around the lessons I learned in MYSO,” she reflects.ย

Her MYSO story began with nervous auditions and weekly rehearsals, progressing through various orchestras–from String Orchestra with Denice Haney, to Sinfonia with Steve Rindt, and eventually, to Senior Symphony with Margery Deutsch and Shelby Keith Dixon. Along the way, she formed lasting friendships with fellow viola players who still celebrate each others’ successes today.ย

After earning degrees from Lawrence University and Northwestern University, Lauren maintained connections with MYSO while teaching in the Wauwatosa school district. When the opportunity arose to direct Sinfonia, it fulfilled what she calls a “pipe dream”–one that continues to feel special every week as she works with students from across the region.ย

Her teaching philosophy balances inclusivity with rigor, drawing inspiration from her own MYSO experience. “We want everybody to be included and involved, but we want everybody to know what hard work can do for you personally,” she explains. This approach resonates particularly well in today’s environment, where she’s witnessed unprecedented growth in music participation, with her middle school program adding 100 new students just this year.ย

Perhaps most telling is how Lauren’s own daughter describes the MYSO difference: “Mama, when my orchestra at school plays, it sounds really good when we’re at our concert, but at MYSO, it sounds really good every day.” This daily excellence, combined with meaningful connections across communities, exemplifies MYSO’s enduring impact.ย

For families considering MYSO, Ms. Roz offers clear advice: “The earlier, the better.” Middle school presents the perfect opportunity to explore passions before schedules become too demanding. As someone who has experienced MYSO from every angle, she knows firsthand how these early musical experiences can shape not just musical ability, but life itself.ย
