Civic Music Association High School Competition Winners
The Civic Music Association has announced the winners of its 2019 High School Competition. The winners performed on the organization’s High School Showcase Recital at the Milwaukee Art Museum on February 3.

Alum Makes Back-to-Back Solo Appearances
2018 grad Julian Rhee soloed with the Eugene Symphony playing the Brahms Violin Concerto on March 21, and with the Wisconsin Philharmonic, playing the Bruch Scottish Fantasy, on March 17. He is juggling his freshman year at Harvard University with his many solo performances.
MYSO Staffer Semi-finalist for National Conducting Award
MYSO Operations Director Matthew Makeever was named a semi-finalist in the Community Orchestra division for the American Prize in Conducting, which recognizes the best orchestral, choral, band/wind ensemble, opera and musical theater conductors in America. Matthew founded and conducts the Milwaukee Philharmonic and was recognized for his work conducting the orchestra’s performance of Brahms’ Symphony No. 2. Congratulations, Matthew!
Flutist Solos with Madison Symphony in Final Forte
Congratulations to Senior Symphony flutist Holly Venkitaswaran, who was named a finalist of the Madison Symphony Orchestra Bolz Young Artist Competition and was featured on its televised Final Forte Concert on March 13, at the Overture Center for the Arts. Holly performed François Borne’s “Fantaisie brillante” sur Carmen with the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Watch Holly’s Final Forte video profile which includes MYSO rehearsal footage.
Flutist to Solo with Milwaukee Symphony in Stars of Tomorrow
Congratulations to Senior Symphony flutist Amy Katzman, named a finalist in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Stars of Tomorrow Auditions. Amy will perform Carl Nielsen’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra with the MSO on Thursday, May 9, 7:30 pm, at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center.
