11.15.22 Note from Mr. Duffy

Hello, Philharmonia Musicians and Parents,

I’m looking forward to our rehearsal on Thursday, November 17!

Parents, please check with your musician to confirm they are reviewing my weekly messages.  😊

Students, please listen to the recording links below, especially the 3rd and 4th movements of the Prokofiev. There are musical challenges in all the pieces we’re rehearsing, but I feel like the two movements of the Prokofiev need your listening attention the most.

String section musicians:  Let’s plan on NOT using pizzicato in the 4th movement of the Prokofiev until further notice.

All musicians:  I verbally gave you rehearsal markers for the Poet and Peasant Overture at the beginning of last week’s rehearsal. I’ll list those markers below so you can make sure all of these are marked in your music. Remember, there are 413 measures in the Poet and Peasant Overture. (Please number your measures!) If you have any repeat signs in your music, then those measures must be numbered twice in order to retain accuracy in measure numbers throughout the piece.

  • Letter A – measure 16
  • Letter B – measure 31
  • Letter C – measure 52 (key change/Allegro strepitoso)
  • Letter D – measure 68
  • Letter E – measure 78 (Allegro, 2/4 time signature)
  • Letter F – measure 111
  • Letter G – measure 130
  • Letter H – measure 150 (Allegretto, 3/8 time signature)
  • Letter I – measure 192 (Tempo I, 2/4 time signature)
  • Letter J – measure 207
  • Letter K – measure 228
  • Letter L – measure 246 (Sostenuto, 4/4 time signature)
  • Letter M – measure 253 (Allegretto, 3/8 time signature)
  • Letter N – measure 281
  • Letter O – measure 295 (Tempo I, 2/4 time signature)
  • Letter P – measure 310
  • Letter Q – measure 337
  • Letter R – measure 355
  • Letter S – measure 375
  • Letter T – measure 392
  • Letter U – measure 405

Thank you for making sure your Poet and Peasant measures are numbered and you’ve marked these rehearsal letters in your music  😊

Also, please note that we do NOT have Philharmonia rehearsal scheduled on Thursday, November 24. (Happy Thanksgiving).

We DO have rehearsal scheduled on Thursday, December 1.

Two additional reminders:

  • MYSO Winter Chamber Ensemble Program Applications are due on November 18.  We want to form as many string, woodwind, and brass ensembles as possible!  These groups rehearse at MYAC from mid-January until the performance date on March 12.  (trios, quartets and quintets)  This is a really great program that enhances musical growth and is a lot of fun for those who participate!  Please apply!  (see the announcement below)
  • Violinists from Senior Symphony, Metropolitan Symphony, Philharmonia, and Sinfonia are encouraged to apply for the violin masterclass with Frank Almond scheduled on December 5.  Those applications are due November 23.

Let me know if you have questions or need additional information about either of these great opportunities.

Thanks for all you do!  Looking forward to seeing you soon!
