Where It All Began: The Founding of Music For Youth.
A number of visionary civic leaders within the Junior League of Milwaukee, Rotary Club of Milwaukee, and the Milwaukee County War Memorial recognized a growing need in the community: Milwaukee’s young people deserved meaningful access to high-quality arts education and performance opportunities. At a time when school-based arts programs were limited and unevenly available, these leaders believed the arts were not an extracurricular luxury, but an essential part of a young person’s intellectual, social, and creative development.
With financial backing, volunteer leadership, and organizational support from all three institutions, the Children’s Arts Program was launched to fill that gap. Central to the new initiative was the formation of a youth orchestra, The Capsters, an ensemble of 30 eager young musicians brought together by a shared passion for music and a rare opportunity to perform at a high level. Rehearsing and performing in a professional civic setting gave these students not only musical training, but also a sense of discipline, teamwork, and pride.
What began as a modest experiment quickly demonstrated the powerful impact of youth-centered arts programming. The Capsters became the foundation for a broader vision, and from that fledgling ensemble, Music For Youth (MFY) was eventually born, laying the groundwork for what would grow into one of the region’s most enduring and influential youth music organizations.
