2004: Jazz Studies Founded

Founded in 2004 by Cliff Gribble, the Jazz Studies program at Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra began with a bold vision: to provide top-quality instrumental and jazz training to young musicians throughout the Greater Milwaukee area, particularly urban students whose culture and heritage are deeply rooted in the origins of jazz and Latin jazz.

From the start, the program was distinguished by its exceptional and highly experienced faculty, who emphasized small jazz combo performance, improvisation, jazz and instrumental technique, and music theory ranging from foundational to advanced levels. Students were immersed not only in performance, but in the language and history of jazz itself.

The program quickly became known for developing high-level jazz musicians while fostering a deep understanding of the many styles, composers, and artists who shaped the art form. Students gained meaningful performing opportunities and participated in clinics with respected local and national jazz artists, broadening both their skills and their perspective.

Placement into one of five levels of study reflected the program’s commitment to rigor and growth. New students were evaluated through auditions, music theory assessments, and recommendations, while continuing students advanced based on prior performance, instructor feedback, and demonstrated progress, ensuring a thoughtful and supportive pathway for every developing artist.
